General Safety

  • Always let your parents know where you are.
  • Use the buddy system - bring along a friend when leaving home.
  • Know your address and phone number. If you don’t know them, have your Mom or Dad teach them to you.
  • Do not play on or near railway tracks. Don’t place objects on the railway tracks.
  • Never pet a dog unless the owner gives you permission first.

Bicycle Safety - Did you know...?
  • The rules of the road apply to cyclists as well as to vehicles? That means you must stop at stop signs and red lights, stop for pedestrians at crosswalks and stop for school buses just like cars do.
  • You can be charged with careless driving for riding a bicycle with no hands or for popping a wheelie? Careless driving carries a fine of $285.00!
  • If you are under the age of 18, you are required by law to wear a helmet while riding a bike on a roadway or a sidewalk. Hockey helmets can’t be used! You can be fined $80.00 for not wearing a helmet.

Bicycle Street Sense - Do You Have It?
  1. Do you stop at stop signs and red lights?
  2. Do you stop to make sure the road is clear before entering a road?
  3. Do you get off your bike to cross at a crosswalk or a busy street?
  4. Are you careful of people walking if you ride on the sidewalk?
  5. Do you ride out from the curb far enough to miss the sewer rate (about one metre)?
  6. Do you ride in a straight line on the right side of the road in the same direction as traffic?
  7. Do you signal your turns early to warn traffic?
  8. Do you check your brakes before you ride?
  9. Do you wear your helmet every time you ride?
If you answered “yes” to all of these questions, you have great bicycle street sense!
