How to Stay Safe at School
  • Obey the crossing guards and safety patrollers at your school.
  • If you catch a school bus, line up in single file and wait for the bus to come to a complete stop. Always use the handrail and listen to the driver.
  • When playing in the schoolyard, play safe and fair, and don’t play rough near younger children.
  • Do not agree to a drive home with anyone other than your usual pick-up, even if it is someone you know like an aunt or a neighbour. If someone unusual comes to pick you up, go directly to the school principal/teacher and advise her.
  • Dress for the weather when outside. Hats, mitts and scarves will help you to keep your body heat so you don’t get sick from hypothermia. In the summertime, wear a hat to avoid getting too much sun.
  • Always take the same route home and walk with friends, if possible. Do not take short cuts through fields or ravines.
Bullying Isn't Cool
  • What is bullying? It can be teasing or criticizing or hitting or kicking a person or leaving that person out of games and activities. The person being bullied feels afraid and alone.
  • A recent study found that about 25% of Grade 7 students were being bullied. You're not alone!
  • Most bullies will deny what they have done or blame others.
  • Bullies behave badly because they have a lot of problems and think that beating up on others is the only way of dealing with these problems.
  • If you are being bullied, it is not your fault! Always try to share a problem with a friend or a grown-up you trust. You deserve to feel safe and cared about.
  • If you are too afraid to tell on the bully, ask a friend to tell someone like a teacher or a parent.
  • If you know someone who is being bullied, tell your teacher or a parent about the bully. Not telling means the bully will continue his/her habit and may victimize others.
  • One of the most effective ways to stop a bully is to WALK TALL. Try not to act scared. Walk with your shoulders back and your head held high.
  • A bully is seeking attention. If you ignore the bully and walk away, he will probably stop bullying you because you are not giving him the attention he wants.
