Is there a reason why Police officers who break conduct regulations (either internally or with the public) are put on leave With pay, as oppose to without pay like Every single member of the regular public would be? Most often returning to active duty a week later for infractions that many would deem to be dismissible actions? Why would my company put me on leave and not pay me, and the Police department put officers on leave, and still have me pay them?
The Police Services Act only allows the Chief to suspend an officer without pay when he or she is convicted of an offence and sentenced to a term of imprisonment (Sec. 89(6)), as someone is considered innocent until proven guilty. Pay cannot be suspended under any other circumstances.
