|WHITBY -- A Whitby family is mourning the loss of a young man who died in a vehicle rollover early Saturday in north Oshawa. |
Ryan Riddell, 19, the father of a 1-year-old son, was thrown from a friend’s Jeep and died at the scene of the crash, in a field off Harmony Road.
Earlier this week his devastated family members were preparing for a funeral for a person they described as a dedicated family man and friend.
“Ryan was a hard-working, devoted father and husband who was always expressing his love for all his family,” a distraught Sandra Riddell, the man’s mother, said from her Hickory Street home Tuesday.
“He was a caring young man who would go out of his way to help others.”
A dedicated Toronto Maple Leafs fan, Mr. Riddell loved spending time watching hockey games with his pals, Ms. Riddell said. An alumnus of Henry Street High school, Mr. Riddell had been working construction.
He leaves behind his mother, father Kevin, and sister Shannon, as well as his common-law wife and young son.
Mr. Riddell was out for the evening with a friend from work when the rollover occurred, Ms. Riddell said.
Durham Regional Police said Mr. Riddell was a passenger in a Jeep that was being driven off-road in a field north of Taunton Road around 1 a.m. Saturday. The Jeep flipped, ejecting Mr. Riddell, who was killed instantly, police said.
The driver and another passenger were treated at hospital for minor injuries.
Police have charged Robert Keith Werry, 23, of Conlin Road in Oshawa, with dangerous driving causing death, impaired care and control of a vehicle causing death, and driving while exceeding the legal blood-alcohol limit.
He is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 17.
