Legal Services Unit

The provision of Corporate Legal Services is a relatively recent development in a modern police organization. A Police Service is created under statute, and its members administer, investigate and enforce pursuant to many legislative and common law sources of authority.

The Legal Services Unit represents and advises the Durham Regional Police Service regarding matters of a legal nature. This includes providing consultation and assistance in all areas of police duties and authority. It also involves identification and management of any risks of liability for the Police Services Board arising from day-to-day administration and operations.

Legal Services works in co-operation with every area of the organization, and also must appear where required before courts, boards and tribunals on behalf of the Chief and the Police Service. Note: Legal Services does not provide legal advice to the public.
