While reducing the risk of crime is a responsibility undertaken by everyone in a community, the DRPS Crime Prevention Unit gives civilians the education, tools and support needed to maintain a safe environment to live, work and play. Using a proactive approach to policing, the Crime Prevention Unit informs the public through displays at open venues (malls, parks, schools, etc.) on how to safeguard their home and themselves from crime, before it happens.

The Crime Prevention Unit aims to anticipate and recognize crime risks in the community, and educate the public on how to remove the risk. This strategy is implemented through various programs which include, but are not limited to:

• Racing Against Drugs

• Police Week

• Road Watch

• VIP – Values, Influences, Peers

• Kids Safety Village

• Neighbourhood Watch

• CPTED – Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design

Through these initiatives, the Crime Prevention Unit continues its commitment to improving relationships and building trust between the Durham Regional Police Service and the citizens of Durham Region.
