The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is an agency of the Ministry of the Attorney General that conducts independent investigations involving the police that have resulted in death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.

The Director of the SIU is empowered under the Police Services Act to lay criminal charges, if they are warranted. Since 2005, the SIU has invoked their mandate 63 times in Durham Region. Once the SIU has invoked its mandate, the DRPS refrains from commenting publicly on the incident. Results of the SIU investigation are released to the public and posted on their website.
