Oct 16, 2017 15:17 ET

A DRPS Officer successfully de-escalated a tense situation involving an armed, distraught male in Oshawa early Monday morning.

On Monday, October 16, 2017, at approximately 12:20 a.m., members of Central East Division were at Oxford Street in Oshawa for a fire investigation. While the officer was seated in his vehicle taking a statement from a civilian witness, an unknown male approached the window and requested to speak to the officer. The officer stepped out of his vehicle to speak to him and this is when the 24-year-old male took out a knife and approached the officer in a threatening manner. The distraught male initially failed to obey commands to drop the knife and wanted the officer to shoot him. The officer was able to move back and build a rapport with the male and he was eventually taken into custody without incident.

The 24-year-old male from Oshawa was charged with: Assault with a Weapon; Weapons Dangerous and Breach of Probation x2. He was taken to hospital for assessment and was then held for a bail hearing.
