  Suspicious Package Causes Evacuation

Nov 17, 2017 20:12 ET

Durham Regional Police investigators are trying to identify the person responsible for leaving a fake explosive device at a grocery store in Oshawa yesterday.

On Thursday, November 16, 2017 at approximately 12:30 p.m., the DRPS was called to the Real Canadian Superstore on Gibb Street in Oshawa. A suspicious package had been left near the north entrance of the store and it looked like an explosive device. Construction workers nearby attended the area and moved the device away from the front door.

The Tactical Support Unit attended the scene and officers from Central East Division evacuated the store and parking lot as a precaution. Experts from our Explosives Disposal Unit examined the object and determined it was not an explosive device.

The investigation is continuing and store video is being reviewed. Investigators want to determine who was responsible for creating and placing the device at this location.

Anyone with new information about this ongoing investigation is asked to contact D/Cst. Hartry of the Central East Division Criminal Investigations Bureau at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 2732.

Anonymous information can be sent to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at www.durhamregionalcrimestoppers.ca and tipsters may be eligible for a $2,000 cash reward.
