  Shoplifter Pulls a Knife on Loss Prevention Officers

A 26-year-old male is facing charges after he pulled a knife on loss prevention officers who were arresting him for shoplifting.

On Friday, February 16, 2018, at approximately 2:12 p.m., the suspect left the Home Depot on Victoria Street in Whitby with an item he did not purchase. A loss prevention officer placed him under arrest outside the store and police were contacted. While officers were enroute, the suspect wielded a knife at two loss prevention officers and fled the area in a vehicle.

Officers from the Tactical Support Unit spotted the vehicle and were able to stop it at Stevenson Road and the Highway 401 on ramp. The male driver and female passenger were placed under arrest.

Stolen items from three other stores in the area were found in the vehicle.

Jerid WHITTAKER, age 26 of Cobourg, Ontario, is charged with: Theft Under $5,000 x4; Possession of Stolen Property x4; Assault with a Weapon x2; Escape Lawful Custody and Possession of a Weapon Dangerous to Public. He was held for a bail hearing.

Debra MCVETY, age 62 of Cobourg, is charged with Possession of Stolen Property. She was released on a Promise to Appear.
