Feb 26, 2018 12:50 ET

Detective Constable Jeff Burns has been named the sixth annual DRPS K-9 Handler of the Year.

D/Cst. Burns is well known among his K-9 peers for his positive attitude and great work ethic. He takes a lead role in training and equipment management and handles the unit's Instagram account, promoting the good work of the unit. Together with his K-9 partner Riot, D/Cst. Burns has conducted a number of significant tracks and arrests during his time with the unit.

Chief Martin and Deputy Chief Fernandes presented D/Cst. Burns with the award and thanked him, as well as his other team members, for their dedication to this specialty unit. The officers and their K-9 partners attend a wide variety of calls every day, including searching for missing persons and suspects.

The K-9 Unit was formed in 1990 and this award is handed out annually in honour of founding member retired D/Cst. Peter Van Der Duim. Congratulations to D/Cst. Burns on this accomplishment.
