Durham Region’s Special Olympics Team officially announced Durham College and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology as the host site for the 2008 Ontario Spring Games.
Hundreds gathered on the campus grounds this week to welcome a procession of athletes and dignitaries. As the host site, more than 900 athletes, trainers and coaches will be housed in the Durham College and UOIT residences. The school will also host the powerlifting and basketball events and provide meals, transportation, media and security for the participants.
Durham Regional Police has been a long time supporter of the Special Olympics with Deputy Chief Chuck Mercier acting as chair of the 2008 Spring Games. “All of our officers are immensely proud of our long time association with Special Olympics and are thrilled to bring the 2008 Games to Durham,” says Deputy Mercier.
Over the years Durham Regional Poilce has organized several fundraisers and events in support of the Special Olympics, including the annual Torch Run. DRPS entered the winning bid that will bring the provincial event to our community for the first time in May 2008.
