Dec 19, 2006 05:22 ET

A Police Attendance Funeral for former Chief David John Edwards was held December 18, 2006 at Kingsview United Church in Oshawa.

Approximately 1,000 people were on hand to pay tribute to the former Chief. Chief Vern White, Regional Chair Roger Anderson, PSB Chair Doug Moffatt and members from the RCMP were all in attendance. The group heard many heartfelt tributes from numerous friends and associates.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the R.S. McLaughlin Durham Regional Cancer Centre or the Bowmanville Memorial Hospital Foundation in David’s memory.

The former Chief passed away Dec. 12th at Lakeridge Health Oshawa. He was born and raised in Oshawa and joined the Oshawa Police as a cadet in April 1961. He took his oath of office as a police constable in April of 1963. When the Durham Regional Police was formed in 1974, he attained the rank of Inspector and was again promoted to Superintendent in the Fall of 1974.

He was made Deputy Chief of the DRPS in August of 1982 and became Chief of Police Designee in May of 1988, officially filling the role in December 1988. He served as Chief from that time until his retirement in 1993.

“Chief Edwards always fought for the frontline officers,” said Deputy Chief Chuck Mercier. “He always had the best of intentions at heart.”

Flags at all DRPS divisions will remain at half-staff until sunset on Monday, Dec. 18, 2006.
