May 30, 2007 09:53 ET

The Durham Regional Police Services Board has announced that longtime DRPS officer Mike Ewles has been named Chief of Police, replacing Vern White.

The 46-year-old Whitby citizen and 25-year veteran of the DRPS was introduced at a press conference today at Regional Headquarters. He will lead the 831 police officers and 296 civilian staff of the DRPS – the 10th largest municipal police service in Canada and the 5th largest municipal police service in Ontario.

“Mike Ewles has proven himself to be a dynamic leader in our organization who has the vision, ability and dedication to lead our police service for years to come,” says Board Chair Terry Clayton. “He is a team builder who understands the importance of community participation in keeping our communities safe.”

Born in Scarborough, Chief Designate Ewles (pronounced YULES) was raised in Oshawa and attended Eastdale Collegiate and Vocational Institute. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Queen’s University in Kingston in 1982.

“It is a privilege and honour to lead such a tremendous team of dedicated men and women,” says Chief Designate Ewles, “I look forward to challenging them to reach even greater heights and working closely with the Board and our citizens to keep Durham Region a safe place to live, work and play.”

He began his career with the Durham Regional Police Service in May 1982 and served in a uniform patrol capacity in Ajax. Over his career, he has worked in every community in the Region of Durham and has served in Tactical Support, Duty Inspector’s Office, the Criminal Intelligence Branch and the Employee Services Branch. He was promoted to the rank of Inspector in 2002 and was sworn in as Deputy Chief in June 2006.

Chief Ewles will be appearing on two local call-in television shows this week to speak directly to citizens. Tonight he appears on Rogers TV from 9 p.m. until 10 p.m. on Talk Local. He appears live on Friday, June 1st on Channel 12's First Take Live from 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.
