Jun 28, 2007 09:55 ET

Attorney General Michael Bryant and Public Infrastructure Minister David Caplan were in Oshawa Thursday to officially mark the start of construction on the new regional consolidated courthouse.

DRPS Superintent Sherry Whiteway and Inspectors Dave Wilson (17 Division) and Dave Kimmerly (Major Crime) were among those on hand to congratulate the province, the Region of Durham and the City of Oshawa for making this important project possible.

Once completed in the fall of 2009, the 350,000 sq. ft. structure will feature 33 courtrooms and house more than 500 employees. It will consolidate eight different courthouse locations in Durham Region. Other features of this important facility will be:

* six courtooms will have video remand conferencing
* Flexibility to accommodate trails requiring additional security
* two remote video testimony rooms for vulnerable and child witnesses
