She is also heading a region-wide review of frontline officer deployment. Deputy Chief Whiteway has received many accolades including the Certificate of Appreciation for outstanding commitment to Community and the YWCA Woman of Distinction Award.

Policing runs in Sherry's family. Her father, Herb Legard is a retired staff sergeant of DRPS, her husband Tom is a sergeant and Sherry’s eldest daughter Nicole is a detective constable with the DRPS.

“This is the proudest moment of my 27 year career, yet very humbling,?says Deputy Whiteway. “It is a privilege and honour to serve the members of DRP and the community as Deputy Chief. I will do everything I can to assist in making Durham Region the safest and healthiest place to live, work and play.?

“The Police Services Board was impressed with the high quality of all internal candidates. The Board congratulates Sherry and thanks all candidates for their efforts and strong performance during this process,?says Board Chair Terry Clayton.
