Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Durham hosted its 8th Annual Awards Night in Whitby last night honouring police officers, volunteers and community heroes. MADD Durham works to stop impaired driving in our region and to support the victims of this violent crime.
Durham Regional Police member Cst. Richard Fantinato was named MADD Officer of the Year and Special Constable Matthew Sauve was presented with the Community Hero Award.
Richard was recognized for his dedication to making our roads safer. His keen observation led to numerous arrests of impaired drivers in 2007. Matthew was also commended for his work in keeping our roads safe and for assisting an off duty officer as she arrested an impaired driver.
Also nominated for dedicated work in the area of impaired driving were Constables Dawna Murray and Mark Michalowsky.
Deputy Sherry Whiteway says drinking and driving turns a vehicle into a weapon and DRP is committed to stopping impaired drivers with initiatives like ongoing RIDE programs. She says dedicated organizations like MADD make a huge difference in helping eradicate the problem.
Congratulations to Richard and Matthew and all the nominees.
