May 07, 2008 11:26 ET

Durham Regional Police civilian member Heather Mason won the Civilian Achievement Award at the Ontario Women in Law Enforcement awards recently. Heather was chosen from over 20 nominees and received the award at the 10th Annual OWLE Awards Banquet on May 2 in Mississauga.

The award is given to a civilian member of a law enforcement agency who contributes by way of outstanding or significant support to her colleagues. This support may be through leadership, job-related community service activities, mentoring or excellence in performance. An advisory council, comprised of eight senior officers from various police services and a judge from the Ontario Court of Justice, selects the winner from the pool of nominees.

The 18-year-employee was recognized for her outstanding community service and volunteerism through her love of music. She created the DRP Rock and Roll band ‘The Heat’ as well as the new DRP Choir. The band travels to various schools in the region, singing about bullying, drugs and gangs. The DRP Choir has performed at the Ontario Police Memorial, Change of Command ceremonies and various other community events. She also volunteers her time with the Heart and Stroke Foundation and a kid’s camp as their musical director, as well as a soccer coach.

“The award is a great honour for the years of hard work and perseverance of my dream to bring together the community and police through the universal language of music,” said Heather. “I would like to thank DRP for allowing me the opportunity to represent the organization.”

Heather joined the Durham Regional Police Service in 1990 and has worked in various areas such as the Chief’s Staff, Records, 17 Division Administration, By-Law Enforcement Officer, 911 Communicator and Facilities Management.
