DRP officers are safeguarding Durham’s roadways again this holiday season as the 2008 Festive R.I.D.E. (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) program was launched on Nov. 23rd.
The R.I.D.E. team will be out in force between now and the first week of January to perform spot checks and remind citizens of the dangers of drinking and driving. On the first weekend, our 2008 R.I.D.E. stopped 1,261 vehicles and conducted 123 roadside tests. Fifteen people were charged with Impaired/Exceed and 28 people were issued 12-hour suspensions.
The launch took place before the Oshawa Generals hockey game at the General Motors Centre and included a brief video showing the effects of drinking and driving, followed by the introduction of the 2008 Festive R.I.D.E. team and the ceremonial puck drop.
To ensure a safe holiday season, remember these important tips:
- Plan your night out ahead of time so you know how you are getting to and from a party
- Always use a designated driver
- Use cabs, Keys To Us, or other services to get home safely
- Call someone for a ride if you have been drinking
- Stay overnight
DRP would like to thank you for not drinking and driving and for keeping our roads safe.
