Durham Regional Police are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a man wanted in connection with a debit card skimming investigation.
On Saturday November 29th members of the Durham Regional Police – Major Fraud Unit (MFU) assisted by the Offender Management Unit (OMU) received information regarding debit card skimming at a Whitby gas station. The investigators received information that a group of males would be attending the gas station to switch out the debit card terminal pinpad and alter it.
Investigators watched the gas station for several hours and observed the suspects remove and replace the pinpad with a similar, stolen pinpad. Investigators followed the suspects to a nearby hotel, where they had rented a room and began to alter the pinpad.
MFU and OMU investigators assisted by Durham Region Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy (DRAVIS) and 18 Division officers converged on the hotel and arrested 7 people involved in this incident. A warrant has been issued for an eighth. Investigators believe the group was preparing to use the stolen debit card data early in the morning.
A warrant has been issued for: Vigitharan SELVARAJ, age 21 of No Fixed Address and investigators are requesting the public’s assistance in locating him. The photo can be found under the "Wanted Persons" section of our website.
