With many people heading out on their annual summer holiday, the DRPS would like to remind vacationers to take the proper precautions in order to keep their homes safe while travelling out of town.
Informing your neighbours you are going on vacation is one of the best ways to keep your home safe. Tell a neighbour you trust when you are leaving and ask them to keep an eye on your house. You may also want to ask them to collect any newspapers and mail from your front porch to prevent it from looking like no one is home. Also, have a neighbour park one of their cars in your driveway to deter thieves.
Install a timer on a lamp that is visible from the exterior of your home. It appear as if there is someone in the residence and make burglars think twice about breaking in. Leaving a radio on while you’re away can also scare away thieves if they attempt to enter your home.
Make sure to lock down all windows and sliding doors securely before leaving your house and double check for any fire hazards such as hot irons, stoves, fireplaces and cords left plugged in.
Follow these tips and ensure you come back to your home just as you left it. The DRPS would like to wish everyone a safe and happy summer holiday!
