Special Olympians Head to Summer Games in Windsor

Jul 23, 2009 15:25 ET

Members of DRPS sent off local Special Olympians as they boarded a train headed to Windsor for the Special Olympics Ontario Provincial Summer Games. Even the wind and rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of the 42 athletes and 12 coaches of the Region 12 team who departed from the Oshawa VIA station this morning.

Since DRPS hosted the 2008 Spring Games for Special Olympics Ontario, Durham Police Chief Mike Ewles will attend the opening ceremony tonight to pass the “Flame of Hope” torch over to the Windsor Police representative.

Many Law Enforcement Torch Run participants are also heading to Windsor today to complete the final leg of the Run along Windsor’s riverfront and crossing the finish line into the opening ceremony.

The Games run from July 23 to July 25. The 650 athletes attending from all over Ontario compete in rhythmic gymnastics, softball, soccer and track & field.

Good luck to all our athletes!
