Youth In Policing Students Raise Funds For Youth Shelter

Jul 23, 2009 15:06 ET

Durham’s Youth In Policing students are at Boston Pizza locations across the region serving lunch and dinner on July 23 to benefit the Horizons for Youth shelter in Toronto. By handing in your receipt after your meal, 10% of your total bill will be donated to the shelter that serves youth from across the GTA.

Participating locations include Whitby North on Taunton Road E., Whitby AMC on Consumers Drive as well as the Ajax location on Salem Road.

This year’s 44 Youth in Policing students have been working hard all summer participating in police activities and interacting with units such as K-9, Emergency Tactical Unit and Diversity. They have attended classes on Use of Force where they learned jiu-jitsu and other self defense techniques. Also, they participated in five days of “Harmony” which teaches about racism, discrimination in the media and breaking down stereotypes.

The YIP students are preparing for the Ripple Effect Youth Forum that will take place at Milestone Christian Centre in Ajax on Wednesday, July 29 which includes several workshops and guest speakers such as Rubin “Hurricane” Carter.

For more information on the Youth In Policing program, please contact Program Coordinator Katie Zeppieri at (905) 579-1520 ext. 4386.
