Durham Regional Police investigators were an important part of a province-wide project targeting illegal gambling machines.
Members of the Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau Illegal Gambling Unit in conjunction with the Durham Regional Police and police services in Hamilton, Peel, York and Toronto have charged 15 persons with gambling related offences following the execution of 29 search warrants at one residence, 26 business locations and two vehicles in Hamilton,York and Toronto on August 5, 2009.
Charges are pending against three other persons.
Officers in the Illegal Gambling Unit initiated the investigation after receiving information regarding the distribution of illegal video gaming machines throughout the Toronto and Greater Toronto areas. The investigation revealed that illegal gambling machines were being distributed and illegal payouts were being provided from video gambling devices at business locations in the Hamilton, Peel, York and Toronto areas.
As a result of the investigation, officers seized $ 41, 221 in Canadian currency and $200,000 in gambling paraphernalia, including 69 video gambling machines and two vehicles.
The Illegal Gambling Unit of the Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau is a provincial partnership between eight police services in Ontario including Hamilton, Peel, York, London, Durham, Windsor, Ottawa and the OPP. The partnership is responsible for the investigation of province-wide illegal gambling activities with an emphasis on organized crime.
None of the accused are residents of the Durham Region.
