  Stopping Child Abuse

Oct 14, 2009 09:27 ET

October is Child Abuse Prevention Month and the DRPS is joining forces with the Children's Aid Society and the Durham District School Board to get the message out.

DDSB Director of Education Martyn Beckett and CAS Executive Director Wanda Secord joined Police Chief Mike Ewles at a media event Oct. 13th to spread the message. The three placed a symbolic purple ribbon on a school bus with the assistance of Constables Stefanie Puckrin and Tracey Weightman of 17 Division (Oshawa). The ribbon symbolizes the campaign and reminds everyone that child safety is everyone's responsibility.

Last year, the Durham CAS conducted 4,180 investigations into suspected child abuse - a number that shocks most people. Everyone has a legal and moral duty to report child abuse - not just known cases, but suspected cases as well.
