  Preparing for an Emergency

Nov 03, 2009 11:50 ET

Chief Mike Ewles, Deputy Chief-elect Scott Burns and Emergency Planning Co-ordinator Sgt. Jim Grimley were active participants in the largest emergency exercise ever held in Durham Region.

The exercise, held Oct. 29th across Durham Region, involved a severe weather event affecting Ontario, with heavy rainfall saturating the soil and swelling creeks and rivers. Although the events were not real, the morning-long exercise felt very real to all participants. The emergency exercise involved the Region's Emergency Management Office and all regional departments, all eight local municipalities, conservation authorities, utilities like Hydro One, Enbridge Gas and Veridian, as well as local school boards.

The Director of Emergency Management, Ivan Ciuciura was the overall co-ordinator and he was very pleased with the final results. It was the largest exercise for regional officials and involved the opening of a Regional Traffic Control Centre and an evacuation centreat the Ajax Community Centre.
