Festive R.I.D.E. Launch Delivers Sobering Message

Nov 17, 2009 13:26 ET

Durham Regional Police delivered a sobering message while launching the 2009/2010 Festive R.I.D.E. program outside Regional Headquarters on Nov. 17th.

All those in attendance were reminded of the tragic consequences involved when people decide to get behind the wheel after drinking. The launch started with a mock collision where one teen was arrested for impaired operation causing death when her van collided with another vehicle. A second teen actor was thrown from his car and pronounced at the scene while the passengers of his vehicle had to be extracted by the Whitby Fire Department.

“On average, 25 people a year are fatally injured in collisions on our roads and 20 per cent of those involved an impaired driver,” said Sgt. Arnott of the Traffic Services Branch. “These deaths are 100 per cent preventable.”

During the launch, DRPS Deputy Chief Chuck Mercier and MADD Durham President Michelle Crabb spoke to the media about how they can help protect members of the community this holiday season. "I encourage everyone to ensure your family and friends travel safely this holiday season,” said Deputy Chief Mercier. “Our goal every year is to have zero impaired collisions on our roadways.”

DRP would like to thank the Eastdale Collegiate drama class, Region of Durham Emergency Medical Services, Whitby Fire Department, Durham Region Works Dept., Town Funeral Chapel, Jim’s Towing, Bell Taxi and Keys to Us for participating in the launch.

To ensure a safe holiday season, remember these important tips:
- Plan your night out ahead of time so you know how you are getting to and from a party
- Always use a designated driver
- Use cabs, Keys To Us, or other services to get home safely
- Call someone for a ride if you have been drinking
- Stay overnight

The R.I.D.E. team will be out in force starting Nov. 19th and will be safeguarding our roadways until Jan. 3rd, performing spot checks throughout the Region.

DRP would like to thank you for not drinking and driving and for keeping our roads safe. We will once again publish the names of those people charged with drinking and driving offences as part of our Festive R.I.D.E. campaign.
