Police are appealing to the public to assist in the identification of a purse-snatching suspect who has been targeting seniors in grocery stores throughout the Region since late January.
Between the dates of Saturday January 30, 2010 and Sunday February 7, 2010, a lone male suspect has attended various grocery store locations throughout Durham Region and stole unattended purses belonging to senior women. The suspect is believed to be targeting women who are shopping alone and whose purses are accessible without difficulty. The suspect then flees the location on foot and has not yet been apprehended by police. None of the victims have been physically injured and in some cases, the stolen purses have been located nearby, emptied of valuables including cash.
The suspect is described as: male, black, between the ages of 18-30 years with a slender build and wearing dark clothing.
Durham Regional Police would like to remind the public to be vigilant and aware of your surroundings while in public places and to safeguard valuables at all times.
