  Summer Safety Tips

It’s that time again when you can sit back, relax and enjoy the gorgeous weather. However, DRP wants you to remember to keep in mind some safety precautions while enjoying the summer months. These tips will keep your mind at ease this summer to prevent any mishaps from occurring.

Water
Many accidents can happen within a blink of an eye, that is why everyone needs to be careful and aware of their surroundings when they are near water. People of all ages can become tired after swimming or develop cramps. It is always a good idea to swim in pairs.

You should also know the depth of the water before jumping or diving in. Look for signs that say “Shallow water” or “No diving”. These signs could be posted because of rocks, logs or shallow waters. Check the weather before going swimming to avoid being out in a storm.

Children:
It is encouraged that children take swimming lessons. These lessons teach them safety while in the water as well as showing them what to do in case of an emergency. Children should always be supervised while swimming whether they know how to swim or not. If your child has not learned how to swim yet, a fitted life jacket should be worn at all times.

Boating
• Inspect your boat before going out
• Always wear a life jacket. It could save your life!
• Boat sober
• Have your boaters license with you
• Check the weather before going out on the water
• Make sure someone knows you are going out on the boat and when you are expected to return
• Have a sound signal and flash light incase of an emergency

The Sun and Heat
The sunshine is something to always look forward to in the summer time but you have to remember that it can also be very harmful to your skin and health. With the sun comes hot heat that can last for days or weeks and this can be a problem for many individuals. Some can become exhausted, especially young children and others that are at risk of having sun stroke or burning easily. When the body is over-heated it sweats to cool down but in some cases sweating is not enough. Without any warning heat stroke can occur and it can result in death or disability if it is not treated to right away. Here are some tips that will help you and your loved ones prevent these dangers from occurring.

Sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 should be worn at all times even if it is an overcast day. It should be applied 30 minutes before going outside and reapplied each time after swimming. Wearing sunglasses with UV protection keeps your eyes safe from the sun’s strong rays. Children over the age of three should wear sunglasses because their eyes are the most sensitive. Hats block the sun, keep the face cooler and prevent individuals from having a sun stroke. Avoid being in full sun between the hours of 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. This is when the suns rays are the strongest. Stay hydrated and find shade during the suns peak hours.

Exercise/Activities
The summer is a great time to catch up with friends, family and yourself. There are many activities to participate in such as, golf, hiking, camping, swimming, running, canoeing and cycling. Also YMCA/YWCA offer programs for the whole family to help stay active.

If you are exercising outdoors you are best to go in the early morning or in the evening to avoid the suns rays. Wear loose-fitted clothing so the skin is able to dry faster and apply waterproof sunscreen so it will not come off when you sweat. Be sure to keep ear phones out so that you are aware of your surroundings and always carry a piece of ID with you incase of an emergency.
Be sure to drink plenty of fluids and if you experience any of the following signs, it is time to quit!

• Weakness
• Headache
• Dizziness
• Muscle cramps
• Nausea or vomiting
• Rapid heartbeat
