The 2010 Youth in Policing Program Officially Begins

Jun 25, 2010 10:05 ET

The Youth in Policing (YIP) program officially began on June 23 with a special launch at UOIT in Oshawa.

Chief Mike Ewles, along with Deputy Chief Scott Burns, Strategic Administrative Officer Stan MacLellan, Constables Keith Richards and DJ Jobanputra and YIP Co-ordinator Katie Zeppieri offered a warm welcome and best wishes to the students as they embark on their eight-week summer experience with DRPS.

“This program is a way to introduce youth into the policing environment,” said Chief Ewles. “We teach them about workplace safety, diversity training and leadership skills. The program is not focused on recruiting but on creating ambassadors, not just for DRP, but for their communities.”

Katie and YIP Team Leaders Brock Wilson, Catalina Herrera and Shawn Beckett highlighted all the challenges and opportunities they would be facing during this unique summer experience.

On July 27 the YIP students will host a Provincial Youth Forum titled “The Ripple Effect,” with special guest music producer Sol Guy.

For more information about the YIP program, please contact Co-ordinator Katie Zeppieri at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 4386 or kzeppieri@drps.ca.
