  Water Safety Tips

The water is a great way to beat the heat but in the recent days there have been many unfortunate drownings and near-drownings in Ontario. DRP is encouraging residents to take precautions this summer when near the water.

On average, 75 per cent of drowning victims are adults and 80 per cent of that total are male. According to Safe Kids Canada, there have been more drownings reported this year compared to 2009 and 2008. Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury death for Canadian children and youth 0-19 years of age.

Before you jump into the water, consider the following tips.

It is recommended that children take swimming lessons. This strengthens them as a swimmer, keeps them active and can teach them valuable safety lessons. If a child has not yet learned how to swim, a fitted life jacket should be worn at all times.

It is never too late to educate yourself. Take a CPR course, you never know when you would need to use it to save a life. Brush up on your skills with the Six Steps to CPR on our website. CPR programs are also offered by Red Cross and St. Johns Ambulance.

Always swim with a partner. Even strong swimmers can experience cramping or become tired. A partner can be there in case of an emergency. Children should always be supervised by an adult even if they are a strong swimmer.
