1st Annual Ontario Police Memorial Golf Tournament an Overwhelming Success!

Sep 23, 2010 07:29 ET

On September 17, the Durham Regional Police and Tim Hortons partnered up to host the 1st Annual Ontario Police Memorial Golf Tournament in support of officers who have died in the line of duty.

Almost 250 golfers hit the links at Deer Creek in Ajax, helping to raise $14,000 for the Ontario Police Memorial Foundation. The foundation was created to honour Ontario police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty and they host a Ceremony of Remembrance at Queen’s Park on the first Sunday in May each year.

“The response was overwhelming,” said Detective Constable Terry Rayner, co-organizer of the event. “I never expected to have to turn away over 100 people in our first year.”

The weather held out as the over 200 golfers competed in longest drive, closest to the pin and putting competitions. There was even a car on the line for the ever elusive hole in one, but it remained unclaimed. The winning foursome shot an amazing 55 and consisted of Rod Speake and three of our own officers, Todd Dennis, Mike Baggio and Craig McInall.

Special thanks go out to Wendy Brown and Durham Region Tim Hortons' franchisees, along with Detective Constable Terry Rayner, Deputy Chief Sherry Whiteway, Detective Constable Victor Alves and Constable Linda Warren for all their hard work and dedication that brought this tournament to fruition. Also, without the support of all of the corporate sponsors, the tournament would not have been the great success that it was.

Mark your calendars for next year’s event, which has been set for August 31, 2011. If you are interested in being a corporate sponsor or would like to book a foursome for the 2nd annual tournament, please contact Terry Rayner at
