Ten Grade 5 students, representing Durham Region school boards, presented their winning essays on “What it is like to be a Police Officer” Oct. 1 at Regional Headquarters in front of a community judging panel and their families. The judging panel was comprised of Chief Ewles, DRPS Police Services Board Representative Rose Rockbrune, DRPA President Mike Glennie, CTV News Anchor Ken Shaw, Connie Shaw from Scotiabank and Moe Pringle, Bonnie Fraser and Bob Pinkney, members of the Police Appreciation Dinner and Awards Night Committee.

The ten students are DRP's new “Deputy Chiefs for the Day” and one lucky ten-year-old will be chosen as “Police Chief for a Day” and will fulfill those duties on Oct. 19, 2010. Also, in their position as Chief for a Day, the winner and two guests will attend the 8th Annual Police Appreciation Night on Oct. 21 at Deer Creek in Ajax to present their essay.

The Deputy Chiefs are: Quinton Armstrong from Jean-Paul II Catholic School in Whitby, Cameron Cummings from Fallingbrook Public School in Whitby, Joshua Fitzpatrick from Adelaide McLaughlin in Oshawa, Christina Antoine from Alexander Graham Bell Public School in Ajax, Brittani Borque from St. Bernadette Catholic School in Ajax, Kiragh Iacono and Joel Toscano from Holy Redeemer Catholic School in Pickering, Hayley Clarke from William Dunbar in Pickering, Sophie White from RH Cornish Public School in Port Perry and Jessica Diceman from Harold Longworth Public School in Bowmanville.

All finalists did an outstanding job presenting their essays and are excellent representatives for their schools. The winner will be announced on October 4.

DRP congratulates all the Deputy Chiefs on a great job!
