Officers Celebrate the Season with Local Seniors

Dec 15, 2010 15:17 ET

DRP officers from Central East Division are bringing festive cheer to some of Durham Region’s seniors as they celebrate the first annual Senior’s Christmas event.

The officers on B Platoon decided that since they would be working over the holidays, why not stop in to see some of our local seniors who may not have family to celebrate with. The idea took off from there with sponsors such as Tim Horton’s, Wal-Mart, Zellers and the Real Canadian Superstore coming on board to donate snacks and gift bags.

Officers, including organizing Constables Janine Henderson and Stephanie Puckrin, spent the morning at Extendicare Oshawa on Park Road where they were joined by choir members from O’Neill high school in Oshawa. The group took part in a Christmas carol sing along and officers handed out coffee tea and cookies while chatting with the seniors.

“We wanted to do this so that no one is left out during the holiday season,” says Cst. Henderson. “Many of these residents have little or no family and it means a lot to have some company – especially over Christmas.”

The students really enjoyed themselves and spent a lot of one-on-one time with the residents talking and singing songs. “It’s great to have the youth on board interacting with the seniors and bridging the gaps that exist between these generations,” says Cst. Henderson.

Following the get together officers visited several members of Extendicare who are without any family at all. They were presented with a special gift bag that included blankets and toiletries.

Currently the Senior’s Christmas event is being held in Oshawa at four long term care facilities December 15 and 16. The hope is that the event will spread right across Durham Region in the years to come. Thanks to everyone who worked hard to bring the joy of the season to our seniors.
