  Protect Yourself from Distraction Thefts

Mar 28, 2011 13:10 ET

Durham Regional Police want to remind consumers to be vigilant with their shopping habits.

Police continue to receive numerous theft reports of women who have their wallets stolen from their purses while out shopping. The suspects will work in partners with one person distracting the victim while the second one removes the wallet. They might ask for help reading a label, reaching something on a higher shelf or by asking directions.

Ensure you safeguard yourself against these people by following these important safety tips.

*Always be aware of your surroundings. Be mindful of anyone loitering or acting suspiciously
*Carry only the items you need with you. Leave large purses at home
*Avoid putting your purse in the grocery cart. Thieves only need a few seconds to steal your wallet
*Shop in a group. You are less likely to be targeted when shopping in a group
*Keep your purse or wallet with you at all times
