  Important Changes Regarding Criminal Background Checks

The Durham Regional Police Service has implemented a number of improvements to streamline and speed up criminal background checks for local citizens.

By adjusting staffing levels, realigning schedules and adopting new technology, the DRPS will now be able to process background checks for both volunteer and employment purposes in about three weeks.

The biggest improvement in service will be for those citizens requiring fingerprints. Although the vast majority of citizens applying for background checks do not require fingerprinting, those that do (e.g. citizens with a criminal record or those who have been previously advised of the need by the DRPS) can now attend a new centralized fingerprinting centre at our Whitby police station.

That centre will be open on Monday, April 4 in the community room at Central West Division, 480 Taunton Rd. E., in Whitby. It will operate weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. It houses two LiveScan non-ink fingerprinting machines that can transmit electronic fingerprints directly to the RCMP, cutting their response time from about nine weeks to 7-10 days.

Although citizens filling out routine background checks (formally known as Criminal Information Requests, or CIRs) are encouraged to attend their closest police station, they can also fill out applications at the new fingerprinting centre.

In order to ensure faster service and to minimize costs for those applying for volunteer positions, citizens are now required to bring a letter from the organization they are volunteering for, on the organization’s letterhead. This letter should state the individual’s name, position and general duties they will be performing. This will ensure you receive the volunteer rate of $15 instead of the $45 fee and it also satisfies the RCMP’s requirement to waive its $25 fee for fingerprint comparison, if required.

Those applying for background checks will be required to make payment at the time of the request. Methods of payment include: cash (exact change), Visa, MasterCard, debit, certified cheque, money order or bank draft.

To help streamline the process even further, the DRPS will no longer be providing civil fingerprinting services for the purposes of Visas, pardons or immigration documents. This will not affect the vast majority of customers, as we only process a few hundred of these requests each year.
