  Chief's 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament a Great Success!

Apr 11, 2011 08:44 ET

More than 140 youths from Grade 9 and 10 competed at the 4th annual 3 on 3 basketball tournament hosted by DRPS Chief Constable Mike Ewles.

The tournament, hosted at UOIT in Oshawa, was a fun-filled day of competition and community involvement. The athletes heard from motivational speaker Farley Flex and various community agencies, such as Eastview Boys & Girls Club, the YMCA and the John Howard Society, who had information booths set up so the youths could learn more about their community.

There was some heated competition throughout the day with both the boys and girls teams from Notre Dame High School in Ajax emerging victorious.

Eight lucky students also received certificates for a one-week basketball camp at Olympia Sports Camp in Huntsville. These athletes were chosen for showing great sportsmanship and teamwork throughout the tournament.

Special thanks goes out to our sponsors, Police Appreciation Dinner and Awards Night Committee, Sharon Vander Duim Mortgage, The System Music Warehouse, Olympia Sports Camp, Little Caesars Bowmanville, Mark Abernethy-Markol Distribution Ltd., Under Armour Canada, Pro Image Sports-Pickering, Whitby Rotary Club, Jim's Towing, DJ Raedar-Mike Rae, The Buchanan Family, Get Wrapped-Oshawa, UOIT and Ryerson University, because without their support, the tournament would not have been such an overwhelming success.

Congratulations to the tournament organizers, Csts. Brian Stewart and Janine Henderson, the volunteers and the participants for a great day.
