DRPS Mourns Loss of York Regional Police Officer

Jun 28, 2011 14:20 ET

It is with deep sadness and regret that the Durham Regional Police has learned of the on-duty death of an officer this morning in York Region.

Constable Garrett Styles, 32, a seven-year veteran of the York Regional Police Service, was struck by a vehicle on Highway 48 near Herald Road in the Town of East Gwillimbury shortly after 5 a.m. The driver of the vehicle has been transported to hospital with serious injuries. The York Regional Police Homicide Unit and officers with the Collision Reconstruction Unit are investigating.

On behalf of all members of Durham Regional Police, Chief Mike Ewles offers his heartfelt condolences to Constable Styles’ family and friends.

“On behalf of the women and men of the Durham Regional Police Service, we want to express our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the family of the YRPS officer who tragically lost his life in the line of duty. This, again, is a stark reminder of how dangerous a job we have and how officers put their lives on the line every day for the safety of the community. I have personally contacted Chief Jolliffe and offered to assist him in any way over the coming days and weeks. I also expressed our condolences in this most difficult time. The thoughts and prayers of all members of the DRPS are with the family of the fallen officer and the members of the YRPS in this tragic time,” Chief Ewles said.

Constable Styles joined York Regional Police as a Cadet-in-Training in December 2003 and became a Constable in May 2004. He worked Uniform Patrol in #2 District, covering Richmond Hill and most recently in #1 District, covering the Towns of Newmarket, Aurora and East Gwillimbury.

Constable Styles is survived by his wife, Melissa, and two small children. Further details will be made available with respect to the visitation and funeral.

The Durham Regional Police Service has a proud and long-standing relationship with the York Regional Police. We stand by our YRPS brothers and sisters in this time of extreme hardship.
