DRPS and Boston Pizza Support Backpack Initiative

Jul 21, 2011 09:23 ET

Members of Durham Regional Police’s Youth In Policing (YIP) program were at two Boston Pizza restaurants in Durham Region recently in support of the Backpack Initiative, a program that gives backpacks and school supplies to children in need in the community.

YIP members partnered with Boston Pizza staff to serve meals inside the restaurant, pour drinks and deliver cheques. For every receipt received, Boston Pizza donated a percentage of the daily sales back to the Backpack Initiative. DRPS members from several departments came for lunch at the Boston Pizza at 8 Salem Road in Ajax and 20 Taunton Road East in Whitby, allowing the YIP program, comprised of local high school students, to enjoy some close interaction with the public.

“It’s important to get the students involved in critical fundraisers like these, and to give them the opportunities and tools to show their commitment to the community,” said Catalina Herrera, Supervising Team Leader in the Youth In Policing program. “Events like these allow us to support worthy causes while advocating a positive relationship between youth and police services.”

The Backpack Initiative at Boston Pizza was organized in lead up to the 2011 Provincial Youth Forum on July 26 at the Milestone Centre in Ajax. The day will consist of dynamic guest speakers and interactive workshops that aim to build leadership skills. To reserve your spot at this year’s Forum, please email youthinpolicing@drps.ca by July 20.
