Region of Durham to Test Public Siren System

Aug 08, 2011 14:22 ET

On behalf of the Durham Emergency Management Office, we would like to inform you that during the week of August 8, 2011 they will be testing the public alerting sirens within three kilometers around Darlington and Pickering Nuclear Generating Stations. This operation is being done in cooperation with Ontario Power Generation, the City of Pickering, Town of Ajax and Municipality of Clarington.

Though a nuclear emergency is a highly unlikely scenario, provincial standards require an outdoor alerting system be installed to alert the public within 15 minutes of such an incident. The system can also be activated for other large-scale emergencies or calls for evacuation.

Please remember, this is only a test.
