A New Whitby Community Police Office

Feb 14, 2003 10:08 ET

The citizens of Whitby will be getting a new Community Police Office next Spring as Regional Council approved the $12.1 million tender February 12th.

The 38,133 gross sq. ft. station will be located on the northwest corner of Taunton Road and Anderson Street in Whitby. The building will be facing Taunton Road and will feature two floors and a full basement. Aquicon Construction Co. Ltd. should begin their work in March 2003 and are scheduled to complete the project in the Spring of 2004.

Police have long term plans to build a 50,000 sq. ft. warehouse directly north of the new police station.

Regional Council also approved the construction of a separate ambulance station for the Regional EMS on the same property. That $4.5 million facility will be located north of the police station, facing Anderson Street. It will be built in a separate contract, awarded to Gerr Construction Ltd. Both companies were the lowest tender on the structures they were awarded.

The 100 officers and civilian staff located at the existing Whitby Community Police Office on Rossland Road have been working in cramped quarters in an outdated, small facility that’s now over 30 years old. Once police operations move out of that facility, it will be returned to the Region of Durham as a surplus building and a decision on its future will be made at a later date.
