  Shield your PIN

Aug 27, 2011 10:37 ET

Durham Regional Police is reminding residents to be extra cautious when entering PIN number into ATM machines and while conducting debit card transactions.

It’s important to shield your PIN number with your free hand while entering it. Please refer to the photo below to see how clear an image a tiny pinhole camera above an ATM machine can produce. It’s also good to get into the habit of covering your PIN while you’re shopping, at a restaurant or purchasing gas.

Industry experts estimate the average loss per individual card compromised in Canada is $600. A compromised debit card is no use to a criminal without the associated PIN.

A recent investigation into ATM tampering right across the GTA led to the arrest of two people in Durham Region.

If you believe your debit card has been compromised contact your local police service.
