YIP Students Donate Over 100 Backpacks

Aug 30, 2011 15:22 ET

As their last initiative of the summer, members of Durham Regional Police’s Youth In Policing (YIP) program raised funds for the Backpack Initiative, a program that gives backpacks and school supplies to children in need in the community.

YIP members hosted several fundraisers including a car wash and yard sale. They were also able to partner with Boston Pizza staff to work as celebrity servers inside the restaurant, pouring drinks, delivering food and handing out cheques. For every receipt received, Boston Pizza donated a percentage of the daily sales back to the Backpack Initiative. DRPS members from every Division also contributed to the initiative, allowing the teens to purchase and fill 119 backpacks.

The backpacks were donated to the Children's Aid Society, the Community Development Council of Durham and Social Services.
