  DRPS Helps Launch “Think and Drive” Campaign

Durham Regional Police joined the Durham Region Health Department and Works Department and the Ontario Provincial Police, to launch the safe driving campaign, “Think and drive…a second is all it takes.” This education and enforcement campaign addresses three driving behaviours leading to motor vehicle collisions in Durham Region; speeding, distracted and impaired driving. Area residents are encouraged to take action and assess their driving behaviours in an effort to make roads safer.

A 2010 survey of over 1,000 Durham Region drivers found that more than 60 per cent never talk on a cellphone while driving and over 80 per cent said they never send or read a text message or email while driving. It’s important for drivers to be mindful of other distractions such as eating, grooming and playing with the radio or other devices.

Deputy Chief Sherry Whiteway thanked all partners involved including DRPS, Durham Region, OPP and EMS. “Think and Drive fits how we do business here at DRP and we are pleased to be a part of this important campaign,” she says. “This is a great opportunity to highlight the personal responsibility we each have when we get behind the wheel.” Deputy Whiteway challenged everyone to improve driving habits to reduce collisions, injuries and fatalities on our roads.

To emphasize the serious consequences of unsafe driving, the launch of the “Think and Drive” campaign was highlighted recently by a road safety event. With support from DRPS, 58 Youth in Policing students laid down on the road for a photograph to illustrate the 58 lives lost from motor vehicle collisions in Durham Region over the past two years (see below for image)

Members of the Insurance Bureau of Canada brought along their driving simulator to the launch and those in attendance were able to experience the consequences of distracted driving .

The “Think and Drive” campaign will include focused enforcement strategies by DRPS and OPP from September to December, promotion in various community publications and facilities, and posters and billboards displayed throughout the Region.
