Nov 02, 2011 14:28 ET

Durham Regional Police are advising parents and children on Hialeah Crescent in Whitby to be careful with their Halloween candy after a needle was discovered in a treat this evening.

A small needle was discovered inside a candy by an 11-year-old girl earlier this evening. At approximately 6 p.m. at her residence, she opened a wrapped candy and bit into it – discovering a needle buried inside.

The child was out “trick or treating” only on Hialeah Crescent in the Manning Road/Thickson Road North area of Whitby on Halloween evening between the hours of 6:20 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. The child and her parent did not venture off Hialeah Crescent. The child was not injured and investigators have seized the candy as the investigation continues. Further details about the candy or the needle are not being released at this time.

Anyone with information that might assist this investigation is asked to contact the Central West Division Criminal Investigations Bureau at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 1855.

Anonymous tips can be made to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477or online at tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $2,000.
