  Pickering Schools Launch Inclusiveness Campaign

Nov 14, 2011 15:16 ET

Twenty schools from across Pickering came together to launch the “I am who I am” campaign at Pineridge Secondary School on Monday.

Members of DRPS attended in support of a committee of student leaders who developed the initiative, aimed at honouring the equity and worth of all people. The goal is to inspire students, parents, staff and community members to support and accept each other by learning, working and living together.

The campaign is dedicated to the late Mitchell Wilson and “I am who I am” bracelets are being sold to raise money for a motorized wheelchair for another student in Mitchell’s honour and memory. The bracelets are green to represent muscular dystrophy awareness and posters include the colour yellow for cancer awareness.

Members of the faculty, school boards and trustees applauded the initiative as students performed songs and dance routines to celebrate inclusiveness. The bracelets are being sold for $1 and T-shirts can be purchased for $8. Students are asked to contact their local schools for more information about getting involved.

DRPS members at 19 Division in Pickering will also be supporting the bracelet initiative.
