DRP officers from across Durham Region brought some festive cheer to local seniors as they celebrated the second annual Seniors’ Christmas event.
Our officers visited over 1,000 seniors in Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa and spent their time sharing stories and treats that were generously donated by Tim Hortons and Bulk Barn.
Choir members from O’Neill high school in Oshawa entertained everyone with their Christmas carols and hundreds of seniors, some without any family, received a gift bag containing bath items, a blanket and a sun catcher. These items were generously donated by various Walmart locations and the sun catchers were donated by Krystean’s Stained Glass Studio and were made by members of DRP, students at the studio, community members and the Whitby Wolfs Midget “AA” Girls Hockey.
Last year the event was only held in Oshawa, but this year the organizers wanted to reach out to more people in our community. “The response was overwhelming when we said we wanted to reach out,” said organizer Cst. Janine Henderson. “From the officers who volunteered their time, to all of the community agencies who donated items, we were able to spend some quality time with the seniors in our region.”
The hope is that the event will continue to grow in the years to come. Thanks to everyone who worked hard to bring the joy of the season to our seniors.
