  Fees for Background Checks Increase

Jan 03, 2012 10:36 ET

In order to cover an estimated $210,000 increase in costs as a result of new RCMP security requirements, the Durham Regional Police Service will adjust the fees for all criminal background checks in the New Year.

Effective January 1, 2012, there will be a $5 increase for those involved in the volunteer sector and a $10 increase for employment checks. Volunteer checks will now cost $20 and employment checks will cost $55, taxes included. For those requiring a fingerprint for the employment sector, an additional $25 RCMP fee will continue to be added. Applicants in the volunteer sector do not have to pay the $25 RCMP fee.

The driving force behind the increase is tighter RCMP search criteria related to the national sex offender registry. If applicants are required to submit fingerprints due to this new layer of security, the RCMP charges a $25 fee. About 11 per cent of applicants in Durham Region have been affected by these tighter RCMP rules.

The new DRPS fees are consistent with those charged in other, similar-sized jurisdictions.
