  Members Receive Team Commendation

Jan 27, 2012 14:43 ET

Civilian members from our Records and Information Technology Units were presented with a Team Commendation on Jan. 26 for their outstanding work in streamlining the Criminal Information Request process.

Citizens of Durham Region were facing lengthy delays in 2011 due to several changes to the Ministerial Directive concerning the release of criminal record information by the RCMP. A project team was created to address this concern and evaluate what was needed to rectify the situation. Three solutions were created: the relocation of the civil fingerprinting station so appointments would no longer be necessary and fingerprints could be taken at the time of application; the electronic submission of fingerprints to the RCMP for confirmation/elimination purposes, greatly reducing the response time; and training all staff on how to fingerprint and process the findings to the RCMP.

The system is now streamlined and running efficiently, a great benefit to the entire community. The current wait time for CIRs is 10 days; a major accomplishment.

“Through the hard work and dedication of everyone involved, we are now better equipped to serve the members of Durham Region,” said Chief Ewles. “We will continue to improve upon this system to ensure we meet the demands of our growing community.”

The centralized fingerprinting centre is located at Central West Division in the community room at 480 Taunton Rd. E., in Whitby. It operates weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. It houses two LiveScan non-ink fingerprinting machines that can transmit electronic fingerprints directly to the RCMP, cutting their response time from about nine weeks to 7-10 days.

Although citizens filling out routine background checks (formally known as Criminal Information Requests, or CIRs) are encouraged to attend their closest police station, they can also fill out applications at the new fingerprinting centre. Congratulations to all our members who contributed to this project.
