DRP Arrests Three in Child Porn Bust

Feb 02, 2012 10:28 ET

DRP officers arrested three suspects in Durham Region as a part of a provincial wide strategy on internet safety for children.

The Provincial Strategy To Protect Children From Sexual Abuse and Exploitation on the Internet is a multi-jurisdictional strategy involving the O.P.P. and other municipal police services across Ontario. As a result of the strategy, 76 search warrants were executed, resulting in 213 charges against 60 individuals.

Inspector Kim Bulloch of the DRPS Major Crime Branch was on hand at a press conference in Vaughan to speak to the media regarding the arrests in Durham Region.

The goal of the strategy is to focus on child pornography, luring and child sexual abuse on the internet as a province wide team as opposed to each police service dealing with the issues individually. The Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) and the OPP subsequently developed a systematic, victim-driven, all-encompassing approach to the prevention of child sexual abuse and exploitation on the Internet.

The individuals charged in Durham Region are:

- Beverly GILBERT, 35, from Oshawa, Ontario, has been charged with one count of Possession of Child Pornography, one count of Make Child Pornography Available and Accessing Child Pornography

- Earl POND, 52, from Pickering, Ontario, has been charged with one count of Making Child Pornography, one count of Make Child Pornography Available, one count of Possession of Child Pornography and one count of Accessing Child Pornography

- Thomas HARDCASTLE, 22, from Bowmanville, Ontario, has been charged with one count of Make Child Pornography Available, one count of Possession of Child Pornography and one count of Accessing Child Pornography

Since August 2006 to February 1, 2012, there have been 16,131 investigations completed by the Provincial Strategy partners and OPP Child Sexual Exploitation Section. During that time, 5,837 charges have been laid against 1,867 people.
